2024 SUMMER ASSOCIATE

Gonsowski Law, P.C., a boutique, woman-owned and women-run art law firm, is seeking one second-year law student for a full-time, paid, legal summer associate position working with the firm’s founder and associates on a broad range of arts-related legal matters and transactions for the firm’s museum and other nonprofit cultural institution clients.

The summer associate will gain an understanding of legal issues in museum administration, such as contract drafting, review, and negotiation; intellectual property; tax; labor and employment; and fine arts insurance issues. The summer associate can expect to be exposed to a wide variety of challenging and rewarding legal matters and to gain hands-on, real-world experience drafting legal memoranda and contracts, conducting legal research, and interacting with clients.

The summer associate program runs for ten weeks and is entirely remote, with a possibility for in-person work depending on the summer associate’s location. During the program, the summer associate will have the opportunity to (i) work closely with the firm’s founder and associates in drafting legal memoranda and various commercial agreements; (ii) attend client meetings regarding important legal issues impacting museums and other nonprofit cultural institutions; (iii) complete an in-depth legal research and writing project; (iv) draft, review, and revise contracts for a broad variety of arts-related clients; and (v) gain experience communicating legal advice to clients.

The educational objectives of the program are for the summer associate to gain an understanding of the legal issues impacting museums and other nonprofit cultural institutions; sharpen legal research, writing, and communication skills; and gain practical experience in transactional matters.

Qualified candidates should have excellent communication skills, exceptional organization and time management skills, outstanding legal research and writing skills, ability to think strategically and analytically, and be detail oriented, proactive, and hard-working. Bachelor’s degree required. Candidates must currently be a second-year law student at an accredited U.S. law school and have excellent references. Demonstrated background and/or interest in the arts a plus.

To apply, please submit your cover letter, resume, two letters of recommendation, transcript (unofficial is acceptable), and legal writing sample to Robin Hoban (robin@gonsowskilaw.com) by January 31, 2024. If possible, please submit all application materials as one PDF.

Interviews will be conducted in February/March 2024.
